史上最短的故事

我喜歡看短篇小說。

短篇小說吸引人的原因，並不是因為夠短，而是因為其獨特的風格。因為篇幅所限，短篇小說一般只會剖出一個故事的某個橫切面，然後讀者就憑這橫切面上的蛛絲馬跡來感受故事內人物的血肉和推敲故事本身的來龍去脈。結果讀者可以用自己的幻想空間去填那些空白的地方，故事的意境往往便會變得耐人尋味，引人入勝。

又或者如倪匡曾經說過：「如果創作短篇小說，和寫一般的小說那種方式來寫，那麼，那不是短篇小說，只是短小的小說而已。」「作者通過短篇小說來表達的，通常不是一個故事……〔而〕只是一個意念。」（這兩段話摘自他二十五年前出版的一本我非常喜歡的短篇小說集《人頭戀+10》的序。感謝早前我細佬幫我找到這本書二00七年的再版。但這本書現已再次絕版，因為是博益的。）

說到短，早前網誌 Copyblogger 搞了一個在 micro-blogging 工具 Twitter 上發表極短篇故事的比賽。有幾短？ Twitter 上容許的字數比手機的 sms 還要少，只得 140 個（手機 sms 有 160）。要在短短的 140 方表達一個意念，真的很難。

結果這比賽有331人參加（如果逐一看看這三百幾個參賽作品，可到這位有心人的網誌）。最後下面這位仁兄 Ron Gould 的故事奪了冠軍。讀罷，真的無話可說。要讀這短短 140 字需時不用十秒，但讀完之後在腦際中的回響卻良久不散。

不過，說到真正「史上最短的故事」，當然不得不提美國大文豪海明威寫的那個傳說中的經典「六字小說」：

“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”      ~ Ernest Hemingway

這段「六字小說」在以前都有看過，但現在做了人爸爸，再看時卻有著以前意會不到的感觸。

Dead Knot

If you have a dead knot on a rope, you would：

(1) Spend some time to study the knot, and try to untie it carefully, or
(2) Just get a pair of scissors and cut the rope up?

My choice? I would perhaps simply forget about the rope. Or have been trying to.

甚麼是堰塞湖？

簡單來說，堰塞湖 (Quake Lake)（堰，粵音「演」，解作「擋水的低壩」）是在地震時引起的山體滑坡、崩落堵塞了河谷，使河水無路可走，因而形成的「臨時」湖（即是和「坑渠淤塞」差不多）。說是臨時，因為這些由地震而起的土砂流形成之天然壩結構鬆散，易被水滲透。當水位越來越高，水壓加大，再加上如果遇到餘震，那這個天然壩潰決的機會就很大！

實際上，根據科學研究顯示，有八成以上的堰塞湖會於半年之內崩堤。這對湖下游地區構成極大的危險。（但如果那堰塞湖的成因是火山爆發 ~ 如日本箱根的富士五湖，那由於岩漿的黏力較高，滲水程度便較小，泥土的抓力也較強，所以相對來說那些天然壩會較穩陣，湖亦較長久。）

北川唐家山便因為有地震滑坡而在多處形成了大大小小的堰塞湖，險情處處。有千幾個解放軍像《絕世天劫》的敢死隊般要奉命去「搶險」，仲大件事過打仗！（反而真的打仗時卻不用派千幾個解放軍去搶險，因為現今打仗只需要簽幾份文件，按幾粒制發射幾支導彈便搞掂！）

下圖是北川某個堰塞湖形成的經過。如果細心看看第一幅圖上的樓宇比例，便可以想像到這個洞的面積之大和水位上升之快！

Certainly you don’t have to agree with any single word of this dude.
