監考記趣

這周我仍在改卷。咁多卷從哪裡來?當然是考試啦!我自己讀了這麼多年書,考過無數次試,這次考試是我第一次以 examiner 的身份進試場。

原來站在另一方的感覺很有趣。以前自己考試時永遠覺得時間瞬間燒掉,但當我現在站在試場的的另一方時,時間好像過得特別慢。

對!我是站著,不是坐著。我都有後悔於初段沒有坐。因為過了個半鐘之後便一直要在試場中走來走去;又要派附加紙,又要帶人去洗手間,總之就再冇機會坐下。

根據指引,學生去洗手間我們是要陪同他/她一起去,但又有何用?我又不會跟他甚至她入去廁格,他/她在裡面做甚麼我也管不了。有位女同學進了洗手間十五分鐘,我便在外面站足十五分鐘。成十五分鐘喎!BB 都生得出啦!我好難唔覺得她是在出貓!我又唔入得去,只好在門外乾等,直至到有另一個試場的女老師也帶學生去洗手間,我便請她幫忙入內找找我的學生是否 ok。問完兩句後,那學生終於出現,並彎著腰、用手按著肚子說不舒服。咁究竟有否出貓?唉,唔緊要啦,她那時的樣子看來的確很辛苦,唔信都唔得。

到考試中段,學生們不斷問我拿附加紙,我才想起我早應告訢校方其實我的問題條條都可以答很多,故一早可用一本厚些的答題簿,我便不用疲於奔命了。一路看著他們揮筆疾書,我一路觀察他們的表情。他們各人對於答試題的專注真使我有很大感覺,因為我一下子見到有這麼多人一起用心地將我對他們說過的話一字一句地回贈給我。我在那刻我真的很感動!

之後,還有一個小時才夠鐘,我發明了一個解悶的方法:背名。慚愧地,我一直到了考試當天也只記得七十幾人中十人以內的名字。我當時便拿著點名紙一個一個名字背起來。半小時候我已可憑望望他/她的面便在心裡說出他/她的名字,七十幾人中只錯三個。都算不錯吧?

就這樣,他們辛辛苦苦考完試,而我便辛辛苦苦開始改卷了!

The story doesn’t end here. Here is the second part of the story.

The tortoise did some thinking this time, and realised that there’s no way he can beat the hare in a race the way it was currently formatted. He thought for a while, and then challenged the hare to another race, but on a slightly different route.

The hare agreed. They started off. In keeping with his self-made commitment to be consistently fast, the hare took off and ran at top speed untilhe came to a broad river. The finishing line was a couple of kilometres on the other side of the river. The hare sat there wondering what to do. In the meantime the tortoise trundled along, got into the river, swam to the opposite bank, continued walking and finished the race.

The moral of the story? First identify your core competency and then change the playing field to suit your core competency.

In an organisation, if you are a good speaker, make sure you create opportunities to give presentations that enable the senior management to notice you.

If your strength is analysis, make sure you do some sort of research, make a report and send it upstairs. Working to your strengths will not only get you noticed, but will also create opportunities for growth and advancement.
